How shampoo is made

1

Surfactant phase

Water and surfactants are blended cold or gently heated, depending on the system. Sulfate-free systems need more care with viscosity, so we build them with a secondary thickener rather than relying on salt.

2

Cool-down additions

Fragrance, preservative and heat-sensitive actives go in below 40 °C so they keep their scent and performance.

3

pH and viscosity

pH is adjusted to 4.5–5.5, the range that keeps the cuticle smooth, and viscosity is checked against the approved sample so the product pours the same in every batch.

4

Fill, cap, label

Filled by volume on the line, capped, labelled with your label, batch-coded and packed.

What your label can say

Claims that fit a cosmetic

  • Cleanses without stripping
  • Adds shine and softness
  • Smooths frizz, detangles
  • Sulfate-free, colour-safe (when the formula is)
  • For curly, fine or thick hair

Claims we do not put on a cosmetic

  • Stops hair loss or regrows hair
  • Anti-dandruff (a US over-the-counter drug claim)
  • Treats scalp conditions such as psoriasis or eczema
  • Strengthens hair from the root / changes hair structure

In the US, a product that claims to treat dandruff or regrow hair is regulated as a drug, not a cosmetic. We make cosmetics, so we keep your claims on the cosmetic side of that line and help you word the label. Compliance and labelling →

Why brands start with haircare

Shampoo and conditioner are bought on repeat, used up in four to eight weeks, and rarely switched once a customer likes the way their hair feels. For a new brand that means a first order can turn into a subscription faster than almost any other beauty product.

They also travel well as a pair. Most of our haircare clients launch with two SKUs — a shampoo and a matching conditioner — and add a mask or an oil on the second order.

Sulfate-free is the default ask now

Most private label shampoo requests we receive specify sulfate-free. The difference is not just marketing: milder surfactants leave more of the hair’s natural oil in place, which is why curly-hair and colour-treated lines are built on them.

The trade-off is foam and viscosity. We balance it with a secondary surfactant and a natural thickener, and we send a sample so you can judge the lather yourself before you commit.

Salon and barbershop lines

Salons are one of the fastest-growing groups of private label buyers: a retail shelf in their own name, at a margin a distributor brand never gives them. 100 units per SKU is small enough for a single salon to test, and we can fill back-bar litre bottles from the same batch.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum order for private label shampoo?

100 units per SKU in our stock bottles, with your label printed free. Custom-shaped bottles, printed bottles or boxes start at 1,000 units because they have to be tooled or printed to order.

Can you make a sulfate-free shampoo?

Yes, it is our most requested base. We use betaines, isethionates and glucosides, and adjust viscosity so it does not feel watery.

Can you match a shampoo I already like?

We can get close on texture, lather and fragrance direction from a reference sample, and we tell you honestly where a copy is not possible. We do not copy a brand’s formula or fragrance exactly.

Can you make an anti-dandruff or hair-growth shampoo?

Not as a claim. In the US those are over-the-counter drug claims with their own rules. We can make a scalp-care shampoo with cosmetic claims such as “refreshes the scalp”.

How long does it take?

Samples in about 7 days after the brief, bulk in about 30 days after sample approval and deposit. Freight is quoted separately.
